Set Induction

"It was Monday, 3pm
It was my first lecture,
The first lecture class experience
 for the students as well."

Chapter 1

The previous lecture notes were not complete, they tend to skip a few which they think is minor, but to me, those were the things that helped me achieve better design processes. I insist that they students should know about these, and so, i took my steps, to gather my researches and simplify them to digestible presentation slides.

I walked in the class and plugged my foamy thumbdrive in and started my lecture...

 Chapter 2

It was rather quiet and most of them don't even talk much to each other, just listening attentively, or was it just an illusion? Are they losing me or am i losing them? The slides were out and i start to build an interactive environment, encouraging them that, in this course, there should be no fear to make mistakes, because  we will identify and fix them anyway. I also told them that design is not a subject to be taught, it is only meant to be shared. In design, there is no right or wrong, only good of bad. Building programmes that doesn't working well in France 100 years ago worked perfectly well in this era.

Chapter 3

I tried to shape the students mentality on what design is all about, telling them the big difference between design, art and decoration.Art is self-based expression and design is user-based functionality,Decoration’s sometimes appealing, but it doesn’t transports anything. Educating them about seeing possibilities and not sticking on thinking that things are always the way they are. A chair does not necessarily got to have 4 legs, and a wall that is empty is not necessarily have to be decorated.

They were aware about the iconic bald decorator who appeared on TV shows, and being a successful businessman, he earn contacts, and bring in professional IDs from the industry to aid the design courses in his college. Students realized that his works are not meant for reference and not to mistakenly take him as an idol when it comes to this course.

In every design primary elements explained, the students were required to show their understanding by sketching it their way. From my observation, the learning was effective, as they are able to define to me in their way, what are those elements are to them. From there, a mild critical thinking was involved. Interaction is getting better.

Chapter 4

At the end of the lecture, the students were required to give feedback on how the lecture has changed their views on the things they see. Some students pointed out that, the next time they see something nice, they would not just say "hey that is nice" and walk away, but more on, "how it works, and how did they do that?". The students starts to get aware, and will get their brain working on everything they see. When the lecture is dismissed, a few students stopped by to ask for notes, and certain things that they want to know in depth. Enthusiasm was there. Hope for a better batch of students with great foundation and attitude is here...
